Coding is as much an art as it is a science. Document Coding usually/sometimes refers to litigation support work in which discovery material is coded for entry into a database.

Discovery/legal material (thousands and thousands of documents obtained in a lawsuit) are scanned and information is put into a database along with the scan of the document so that ALL the discovery material is cataloged and can be searched electronically.

Sometimes instead of scanning the documents, the descriptions of the documents are put into a database or into excel. There are usually mountains and mountains of documents and temps working around the clock to catalogue the material.

It is POSSIBLE that DCOMENT CODING in your case may just mean formating a document the normal way in a word processing program like Word or Word Perfect. But,

When I have heard the phrase "Document Coding", it has usually been used in reference to "LITIGATION SUPPORT" and has meant putting information in a databse program or in excel which describes thousands and thousands of documents (usually scanned) which have been submitted to a law firm as part of the "discovery process" in a law suit.

This working is a big time business for outsourcing offshore, mostly to India.

Lately, there seems to be a lot of work in law firms here to catalogue mountains and mountains of documents in excel. This can be a great gig because most of the PERM retards in law firms don't know Excel, so companies have to use a lot of temps working around the clock, lots and lots and lots of OT and lots and lots of money.
